Giang Hoanga Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach in Understanding the Life and Works of Dr Jose Rizal: An Advocate of Internationalization

Abstract

Republic Act 1425, mandates all Philippine schools to offer the course on Rizal’s life and works. The study aimed to determine the impact of learning activities and REACT strategies in understanding the life and works of Rizal. The importance of the study is to stir a profound appreciation of the life and works of the country’s national hero that can be used for lifelong learning. A qualitative survey and a survey questionnaire were used as data collection methods. There were eighty-eight (88) respondents who answered the impact of the learning activities through a simple random sampling and one hundred thirteen (113) respondents answered the open-ended questions through purposive sampling. The means of the study indicated that the strategies used in the different activities conducted in the class had shown a major impact on the students. Results also indicated the most common themes of extending a helping hand, rays of hope, character building, the role of a model, care for others, fear of God, knowing yourself, love of parents, additional knowledge, presence, inquisitiveness, critical thinking, expression of ideas, self-expression, happiness, appreciation of others, self-confidence, self-discovery, appreciation by understanding and cognition. The learning activities served as a springboard for students to be more responsive, cooperative, critical, creative, and interactive in-class discussions. Moreover, the student's engagement in the different topics through the REACT strategies was the directive path for the students to appreciate and recognize the importance of studying the life and works of Rizal. Thus, this study reflects sustainable development goal 4.
