Evaluation of Media Architecture in Urban Night Scene — A Qualitative Study of Avena Theater in Swansea

Abstract

In June 2020, the Media Architecture Biennale Formal (MAB) was held in Amsterdam. Due to the influence of pandemic, most of the activities were held online. In the introduction of this session, it is proposed that the transformation of media architecture is gradually transformed from media facade and urban screen to urban experience, management and design.What kind of position does the media architecture in the urban night scene need to play as discourse, information bearing, emotional sustenance, image morality and architectural presentation? As a part of mass media, what kind of carrying task should media architecture undertake in healthy daily life? Under the guidance of phenomenological research methodology, this paper carries out questionnaire survey and related research among students majoring in Architectural Science (Bsc) in the School of architecture, computing and engineering of University of Wales Trinity Saint David.In Swansea, the city where the university is located, Avena theater opened in March 2022: "... More than 70000 LED light bulbs will be UK's biggest digital feature". As residents of western countries, the research participants do not have much experience about media architecture. At the same time, as architectural students, they can respond to the environmental experience around them more quickly. The purpose of this study is to explore the essence of the research object's initial experience of media architecture, and based on the essence of experience in this architectural phenomenon, to explore what strategies and rules a healthy urban night scene should follow in the construction process of media architectur.
