Social Fairness for a Community in Poverty in the Natural Area of Environmental Protection in Brazil: The Chapada Dos Veadeiros

Abstract

The paper corresponds to the results of the Doctoral Thesis which investigated the possibilities for social fairness in a community of social vulnerability located in an area of environmental protection in Brazil: the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (PNCV), in the state of Goi√°s. During the World War, the PNCV was a quartz mining area. Nowadays it is considered a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO for their outstanding beautiful scenic scenarios and natural resources. However, those resources serve a minority of businesspeople in the region, whereas the community faces difficult living conditions, such as: sharp economic inequality; lack of health services, sanitation, and education; labor exploitation, expropriation of livelihoods and hunger. Our aim was to analyze the existence of factors which could help the community advance their living conditions. The analysis was performed from the perspective of critical environmental education through the Content Analysis method. We were in familiar terms with the area for three years, when we conducted interviews, took notes and studied the region documents. The investigation leads us to point out the existence of factors which could contribute for changes in living conditions present in the way of thinking and in the organization.
