Abstract

In this paper, the efficient use and the misuse of the thumb in piano playing have been investigated by examining appropriate and inappropriate positions of the thumb on the keyboard and analyzing the effects of the positions on the other digits, based on biomechanical aspects and physical dynamics of the piano technique. The appropriate position and proper use have been depicted and specified, the new methodology has been proposed to build proper positioning, and the innovative exercises have been presented to develop functions of the thumb in piano playing.
