Abstract
The cultural and creative sectors suffered because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the performing arts sector being badly hit as live performances were no longer permitted during the pandemic. Performing artists and their groups migrated creative projects online via Facebook Live and some other online platforms. Artists have discovered a hybrid performance practice, where actors perform live in a remote space that is then broadcast in real time to various social media platforms. This is in keeping with the “live” element of theater production.
Using qualitative research method, this study investigates the creative processes and artist experiences, as well as the transfer of text into performance using digital technology in staging a live art production. Sources of data are from interviews with the creatives who participated in the Facebook Live performances of PARES Mindanao Duo Festival and 1NNOSARA Mindanao Solo Performance Project that were streamed online between 2020-2022.
Findings of the study revealed that creatives are engaged to innovate their performances, riding on technology as the hybrid medium of performances during the pandemic. Creatives reinvent their performances through the transfer of text to performance on an online platform. According to the study, since the performances must go on without interruption, actors experience the feeling of performing live when doing so via Facebook Live. But since there was no real audience, the actors did not get the full experience of putting on a play. This study proves that performing live on Facebook Live results in artists’ innovation and reinvention to claim relevance in the time of the pandemic.
