Reframing the Perspective in Teaching Science Investigatory Project in the Philippines

Abstract

Teaching research in the Philippines is compartmentalized based on strands such as capstone and science investigatory project. Despite the difference in nomenclature, the process of teaching and even the competencies are somewhat the same. The main discrepancy of teaching research is on asking for specific construct when students do not have the sufficient exposure. In this study, a radical move is proposed as entry skill to self-regulating practice that will scaffold the students in accomplishing science investigatory project. Unlike the prescribed sequence in the DepEd, a series of activities was designed to improve (1) science abstract dissection, and (2) science abstract writing. The entire set of activities was named immersive science investigatory project module and the exemplars used were the high school SIP that competed in the International Science and Engineering Fair. The results were extracted from experts and four-school sequential implementation for the successive improvements. Expert evaluation indicated the high acceptability of the module. Performance of respondents in four pilot schools showed improved abstract dissection accuracy and improving lexical index trend on written abstract. The respondents also displayed a very good intrinsic motivation in undertaking all the activities. It is recommended that the module be tried in several schools to further refine the implementing protocols and strategies that will
eventually lead to policy recommendation on research.

Dissecting research abstracts enables me to provide a concise overview of the main points of the research, allowing me to quickly determine whether the full paper is of interest or relevant to what I am looking for. According to Coach Vince Lombardi, practice makes perfect. With a series of abstract dissections, students and researchers decide whether to read further: Readers often use the abstract to determine whether a paper is relevant to their interests or research needs. Therefore, a well-written abstract can encourage readers to read the full paper, increasing the visibility and impact of the research. This aids me in assessing relevance, evaluating quality, determining impact, and improving my writing skills. Abstract dissection is truly an essential practice in determining what goes in and what goes out in your study.

It is crucial that we pay attention to what is lacking in the learning or the ways how lessons are taught to our students. As a future educator majoring in science, and most likely will be able to teach STEM students as I specialize in chemistry, it is my passion to give or impart the knowledge that I have effectively to my students. ISIP module is a great opportunity for me to check or make sure that from thinking of a topic to finishing their research project, they are able to understand fully what their study is for and for a great purpose for the community. More importantly, they have fun in their research project!!

Recipes tell you nothing. Learning techniques is the key. -Tom Colicchio As a student writing academic paper particularly research paper is a challenge that requires a lot of reading and writing. The thing is every student can read and write but the problem is that others lacks the skills and potentials to construct, dissect and start an academic paper due to poor learning foundation. To think that writing and reading scientific abstract was not introduced in DepED curriculum guide for research/ capstone project. I’m glad to found this SIP module. It highlights writing scientific abstracts, it showcased activities and examples in each part of research paper to broaden the understanding of the students, serves as an assessment in choosing and deciding a topic for a research paper which is not provided on the books currently used in research. These improvements is essential to prepare and strengthen the skills of the students on how to dissect and write scientific abstracts. If this SIP module will be utilize by the DepEd we can help a lot of students on their struggles in writing scientific abstracts. We all knew that terminologies alone won’t make you understand a certain topic you need a model, illustration video or visuals to understand the topic so is in writing scientific abstracts we can’t expect good outcomes from students if they lack the fundamentals in writing one. We need this module to be known as it highlights, showcases and assesses students in their journey on abstracts dissecting and writing.

The study "Reframing the Perspective in Teaching Science Investigatory Project in the Philippines" is indeed very good research which can help address the gaps in determining the student's conceptual understanding, abstract analysis and also crafting skills in writing scientific abstracts. It is important that students know how to analyze abstract, especially in high school because they will be required to do their own research, yet most students don't know how. That is why having this immersive SIP module can help address this knowledge gap. I find this study really interesting because if this will be implemented in all school, students will be exercised how to dissect scientific abstract which is really useful when choosing relevant study for their research. The positive result even made this study greater, it was proven to be effective thus I am hoping that it could help all secondary students in the Philippines.

I am glad that I was given this opportunity to share my insights regarding this study, entitled " Reframing the Perspective in Teaching Science: An Investigatory Project in the Philippines" because just by watching the presentation, I gained a bucket of knowledge, too. Most especially at these times that we’re working on our academic papers, where writing an abstract, is one of them. Undoubtedly, it’s quite challenging for students to produce an abstract, and this video is definitely helpful as it addresses how to guide students in writing a good abstract and also exhibits various activities that aim to improve science abstract dissection. My younger self, specifically during elementary and high school, who participated in SIP events, would be very happy if we had been exposed earlier and trained well in developing and dissecting abstracts.

The abstract provides a clear overview of a study focused on improving teaching research practices in the Philippines, particularly on enhancing students' skills in accomplishing science investigatory projects. It highlights the proposed radical move of using entry skills to self-regulating practice as a way to scaffold students' learning. The abstract also describes the designed activities and the results of the study, which were extracted from experts and four-school sequential implementation, indicating an improvement in abstract dissection accuracy and lexical index trend on written abstract. Overall, the abstract is well-written and provides a concise summary of the study's purpose, methodology, and findings. It also includes a recommendation for further refinement of the implementing protocols and strategies that could lead to policy recommendations. However, more information about the specific activities used in the immersive science investigatory project module and the methodology used in the study would make the abstract more informative.

The importance of science education to Philippine development is that student’s scientific inquiry abilities, beliefs and attitudes such as objectivity, curiosity, and honesty as well as mental habits such as critical thinking are all developed as a result. The individual student can use all of these for his or her personal growth, future career, and overall quality of life. Teachers may now adapt the way that children learn thanks to technology. They can use technology to enhance their teaching strategies and personalize learning, which boosts their productivity and effectiveness as teachers. The STEM strand's capstone project focuses on technology, engineering, and math. This is important for the student to develop critical thinking skills in the future. We may come up with the project's concept on our own or the teacher may recommend one.

Through this study I was able to understand the importance of writing scientific abstract and visualizing its components. I can still remember that during my Senior High School years we did not discuss about abstract development and abstract dissection. Hence, with this immersive SIP module I can say that it is really beneficial to the students because research development is meaningless without properly created abstract which makes the research study more interesting.

It is one undeniable fact that an abstract of one scientific research is itself a representation of that scientific paper as it consists of many pertinent details about the study. That is why, I find the presented paper entitled Reframing the Perspective in Teaching Science Investigatory Project in the Philippines (about the video watched) very helpful because it significantly addresses one of a certain challenges in making a research study- which is creating a good abstract. The presented research study used a series of activities designed to improve science abstract dissection as well as science abstract writing. I firmly believe, and it actually shows in their research results, too, that their study would make a great deal of change and help many researchers make a concise and direct research abstract- a proper research abstract.

Writing an abstract is very challenging since you have to summarize, emphasize and highlight all the important keywords, which will also make the reader hooked on your study. I want to give a round of applause to the researcher as they came up with this idea that has become and eventually will become a great tool in teaching research to students. This will also guide/help students to formulate new ideas for their future research studies.

When looking for a related article to a specific research project or investigative project, abstracts have historically been the first paragraph a researcher would see. However, some students find it difficult to analyze and comprehend abstracts, especially ones that are confusing and difficult to understand. The study mentioned above can be highly helpful to upcoming researchers, pupils, and educators in terms of improving the writing, interpreting, and reading of scientific abstracts in the context of instructing science investigative projects. According to the findings of the study, there is a growing progression towards creating, reading, and analyzing scientific abstracts. It also fosters an intrinsic motivation that results in enjoyment and appreciates an abstract's meaning. Thus, this study should be applied to improve education in order to ensure high-quality research. Kudos to the researchers behind this study.

I'm so glad that this study was introduced by my research professor whose also an author of the said study. Through this immersive SIP module, I absorbed many information that helps me in writing my very own research study as an undergraduate student in MSU-IIT. Way back in my senior high school years as a STEM student, my practical research teacher did not teach us in visualizing the components of scientific abstract as well as the way how it should be written. Although we are guided from time to time in making the different chapters but I believe it is not enough to fully help us in making a successful experimental research. As what the objectives of this study, I am sure that it will really benefits the Senior High School (SHS) STEM students as well as the teachers because of its crucial content about research development. Furthermore, I appreciate and commend this immersive SIP module and hoping that this will be implement to all schools here in the Philippines so that crafting research will not a problem anymore for students as they will be equip with the necessary skills in research construction.

The intervention in the study is truly interesting since it focuses on honing first the comprehensive and writing skills of the student, before extracting research ideas from them. Truly, as a researcher in my high school years, it does frustrate us to make research topics without even prior knowledge about it--which is bridged by this study's intervention. Students who have not been acquainted with research terminologies and methodologies may gain a sense of clarity and direction. Additionally, I am also intrigued to discover the related studies of reading and writing abstracts and their effect on research-making skills. It is unfortunate that it was not supplied in the abstract above. Also, it seems to be lacking data analysis. "Expert evaluation" seems to be too broad and may need narrowing as to what type of analysis the expert used. Regarding the video presentation, it was quite discouraging so I stopped watching it. To me, it seems that the presenter was not presenting but rather, only reading what was written on the screen. It is engraved in me by my high school teachers and research advisers to never read your report, which is why I was quite disappointed in the presentation. Nevertheless, these remarks are only my honest observations and critique. I do hope this will be taken on a positive note and for future improvements.

From what I have understood from the video, this research study will guide the students in correctly writing research papers as early as senior high school. It's an opportunity for students and teachers to write and find research topics not easier but at least bearable than before, given the fact that before the student can graduate from high school and college, needed to go to this phase (writing research papers). Thank you for making this bravo!

LADY JAY DIANE MINO
I am enlightened by this research study which is to implement an Immersive SIP module. When I was in junior high school under the science curriculum, we already had a research subject as early as our 7th grade. In my 8th grade up until 10th grade, we already have to make Science Investigatory Projects (SIP) which uses an experimental research design, submit a whole research paper of it, and our research defend. In my senior high school (STEM strand), we opted to practical research or the 3Is (Inquiries, Investigation, and Immersion). But since then, it didn't tackle specifically about abstract writing, which is also an important and vital part of the research paper and study. Thus, I am glad to this preparatory instructional material in research, which is the Immersive SIP module. In my prior experiences in research subjects in JHS and SHS, although we were guided in choosing our research topic and in writing the different chapters in our research paper, I agree that there is a need to provide more examples of writing the different parts of the research paper as there will be varying writing styles and important writing updates among them, which we, students, will observe and gain knowledge about. Moreover, dissecting and writing an abstract is not well-introduced to us before as my previous teachers would just show their research study during their undergraduate thesis as our example or format perhaps in writing the different chapters of our research paper. Therefore, I commend this Immersive SIP module because it helps us, students, to properly dissect and write scientific abstracts as it serves as the summary of the whole chapters of the research study/paper highlighting the major key points and results from each chapter of the research paper so that the reader will have a background knowledge and awareness of what the research study is all about and its significance and practical application of the research study to the macroscopic world around us.
