Barangay Arimbay’s Indigenous Verbal Lore: An Anthology of Riddles

Abstract

Barangay Arimbay's Indigenous Verbal Lore: An Anthology Of Riddles The general objective of the study was to analyze various types of riddles based on the elements of poetry; draw out beliefs, traits, values, cultural practices and traditions reflected in the collected riddles; and, determine from said folklore texts which influences are relatively contemporary and which are basically traditional. This is a descriptive type of research which involved collection of riddles. The primary sources of data were the riddles gathered from the interview conducted among the residents, while the secondary sources were taken from books, on line sources, graduate theses and dissertations. The study revealed that there are beliefs, traits and values present in the collected riddles. The values reflected were; determination/ perseverance, hard work, cleanliness, optimism, industry, happiness, bravery, simplicity, creativity, love for environment and selfless love. These riddles should be documented lest they perish with time because only the aged folks are capable of retelling them. Good riddles rely upon creative use of figurative language such as metaphor, simile, and metonymy; concrete imagery; and imaginative presentation and description of an object or concept. Because they are games, riddles are excellent vehicle for introducing students to poetry and poetry writing. It is therefore recommended that lessons on riddles be made to serve as instructional materials for students. In this case, the young ones will be acquainted, familiarized and will understand that a riddle is not merely a game for entertainment but also a source of cultural values and beliefs.
