Development of a System to Analyze Students’ Keystroke Sequence in Programming Education

Abstract

A coding style is one of the techniques of improving the quality of software. However, coding processes, such as a key type order, are not made into the main concerns. In bringing up a software engineer, mastery of a coding style including a key type process is important for novice programmer. However, even if it is the same program created according to the same coding style, the coding process is not necessarily the same. And it is difficult to get to know the coding process. Therefore, we developed a system for the purpose of recording keystroke sequence. The system is built by a client/server system. A student inputs a program into client application. And the keystroke sequence is transmitted to the server. The server can show a result of analyzing students' keystroke sequence on the web. This paper reports the details of the developed system.
