Abstract
The family is an essential social unit. It is in the family that people are prepared for the public community. The relationship between the members of a family affects how each person participates in society. However, there are situations where people have to choose between their family or society. In the stories "Ug natumba ang karaang akasiya" (And the old acacia fell) and "Ang baybayon ni Simon" (Simon's shore), Ernesto Lariosa shows how filial responsibility became a priority over social responsibilities. Lariosa's stories depict the strong Filipino value of the love of family. The selected stories narrate how parents and children differ in their opinions.This paper will look the practicality of the characters' decisions as written by the author. With the theme of "family", Lariosa's stories are properly aimed at the Filipinos who have placed a very high importance on the family.
