Biochemical Effect of Antioxidant Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods on Hematology and Serum Lipid of Healthy Wister Rats

Abstract

Scientific Research supports biological activity of antioxidant Nutraceuticals and Functional foods. The study compared effect of these two antioxidants in healthy opposite sex eighteen albino rats of the Wister strain, weighing between 150 and 300g. They were randomly assigned to three groups of six animals each. The control- Group A were fed with nutraceutical supplements consisting of caplets of vitamin C- (60mg/day), B-carotene mixed with vitamin E (β-carotene-12,500IU, vitamin E- 200IU) and clean drinking water. The treatment- Group B were fed with functional foods (Oranges, carrot and soybean) and clean drinking water. The placebo- Group C were fed with rat chow (vital feed) and clean drinking water. The results of hematological parameters and serum lipoprotein levels from various groups were analyzed and the results are shown below; White Blood Cell (A-6.72±0.19, B-7.44±0.17 and C-4.46±0.34), Total Red Blood Cell (A-4.48±0.11, B-5.28±0.19 and C-2.86±0.27), Packed cell volume (A-47.2±1.30, B-49.60±1.14 and C-36.00±2.92), hemoglobin concentration (A-15.8±0.16, B-16.5±0.21 and C-13.12±0.87) and Platelet count (A-272±10.37, B- 295±11.18 and C- 140±7.91). Total cholesterol (TC) (C-2.52+0.08, A-2.06+0.20, B-2.31+0.13, Triglyceride (TG):C-1.10+0.07, A-0.75+0.39,B- 0.80+0.38, High density lipoprotein (HDL-C): C-1.15+0.25, A-1.22+0.08, B-1.37+0.29, Low density lipoprotein(LDL-C):C- 0.84+0.16, A-0.36+0.05, 0.70+0.27) ). Hematological parameters were positively influenced by the vitamin supplementation (p>0.0 5) and greatest effect was achieved in group B. The result also showed a significant (P>0.05) decrease in TC, TG and LDL-C in the antioxidants treated groups compared to the control and a non-significant (P<0.05) increase in HDL-C.
