A Comparative Study of Prosodic Boundary Features with Encliticized and Procliticized Function Words

Abstract

In spontaneous speech, unlike read speech, there are many cases that prosodic phrasing does not match with syntactic structure. Through the review of the previous researches, it is confirmed that this phenomenon usually occurs at intermediate phrase boundaries where function words are encliticized or procliticized. This research aims mainly to see how prosodic boundary features change as the position of intermediate boundaries is relocated. The experimental data were extracted from the audio book,『Hoot』for spontaneous speech and from the high school English text book for read speech. In ten pairs of the selected sentences, the same function words were encliticized to proceeding host words or procliticized to succeeding host words. After measuring the length of the pauses and the final syllables, and the changes of fundamental frequencies with using Pratt for each case, differences among prosodic boundary features were analyzed. The results of analysis showed that although the lengths of the pauses at intermediate phrase boundaries in which function words are encliticized are shortened, the length of final syllables are lengthened. It also showed that the patterns that high phrase accents prevail over low phrase accents. Moreover, it is revealed that final syllable lengthening and phrase accents occur at early phases to boundary positions. On the basis of this research, it is discussed that prosodic phrasing exposes the overall structure of the sentences at the early stages of utterance, and thus enable listeners to anticipate the upcoming development of utterances. Considered that prosodic phrasing is the essential part for language learning, it is proposed that the learners of English as a second language should practice prosodic phrasing rather than syntactic phrasing.
