Community Empowerment to Enhance Demographic Awareness: An Educational Approach from Indonesia

Abstract

This study aimed to enhance the demographic awareness through educational approach which focused on community empowerment. In an effort to accomplish demographic awareness, the study referred to the Model of Precede and Proceed initiated by L.W. Green. The study was conducted in two phases – Mapping and Intervention. Data from the first phase, mapping, was collected by using observation as well as survey techniques given to representative people who living in Regency of Meranti Island, Riau Province, Indonesia. The mapping data then was analyzed using the descriptive method; and found that there were 5 aspects related to demographic awareness: Knowledge on demography, Availability of data and information about demography, Family empowerment, Health behavior, and Social aspects. At the second phase, the model then was designed to function three triggering factors (predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling) to be able to influence behavior of community targeted. Furthermore, the second phase, intervention, was conducted by implementing programs associated with education, training, and counseling. Following these intervention programs, the second phase was also designed by conducting quasi experiment of one group pre-post test. The result of the second phase that was obtained from both test and observation was an enhancement of demography awareness of the people targeted, including their knowledge as well as behaviors.
