Abstract

The most salient feature of human societies is their diversity and complexity. When its essence is captured, there are necessarily systemic dimensions and specific domains that stand out. The central aspects of the functioning of each community coexist both with transversal vectors and with more peripheral elements. Without the recognition of this multidimensional composition, the understanding of wholeness is compromised. Therefore, the processes of memorialization, to be able to convey the most accurate memory possible over time, must seek to apprehend the past in its entirety. To date, archival policies have focused mainly on safeguarding the memory of public organizations and some private ones, such as those of religious origin. The shift towards the societal approach aims to consistently broaden the range of protective action on non-public archives, in order to ensure their preservation and the construction of an inclusive, plural and democratic memory.
