Curricular Design for English Extension Courses at Universidad Libre, Bogota-Colombia

Abstract

The proposal deals with an ongoing research project at the English Extension Courses at the Faculty of Education at Universidad Libre in Bogota, Colombia, that are developed by some pre-service language teachers of the BA Language Program, as part of their pedagogical research practice. It is an Action Research that develops the three main functions superior education has in Colombia: teaching, research and social service. The general research objective is related to the building of a curricular design for the English Extension Courses that takes into consideration: 1) students' needs and interests, 2) the Colombian context, 3) teachers' opinions and suggestions based on their professional experience on the light of relevant theories, 4) A deep analysis of the mission and vision of the university, 5) theoretical revision on topics like language curriculum design, learning and teaching processes, materials design, evaluation, interculturality, communicative competences, among others. The English program followed in the Extension Courses is only based on the contents of a commercial book but not in the aspects already mentioned. At the end of the project the researchers expect to contribute to the: 1) Improvement of pre-service teachers' didactic competence, 2) Design of teaching and learning materials, 3) English learning process, 4) Teachers' development and, 5) Enhancement of teachers' roles specially as problem solvers and transformers of their practices, due to permanent reflection, colleagues discussions and sharing of experiences and findings in the classroom.
