This paper presents the ‘EAPM-CW’ as a new methodological framework for planning and management of coastal wetlands, which was developed mainly upon principles of the Ecosystem Approach. The EA ‘Ecosystem Approach’ is the most internationally recommended to meet sustainable development especially in such sensitive ecosystems, as it has been recommended by several international organizations such as: CBD, IUCN, UNDP, UNEP, GEF, and Ramsar international convention for wetlands. However EA is still in its initial generic stage, there is a need for developing it into a methodological framework to be applied in such sensitive areas. The main objectives of the EAPM-CW were identifies upon the special features of coastal wetlands as one of the most productive ecosystems in the world; and the challenges they are facing (e.g. sea level rise, increased development pleasures) were indentified to draw the main. However the EAPM-CW learned from the practical international experiences, it integrated selected principles and guidelines of other environmental recommended approaches (e.g. Watershed Approach, participatory approach) to develop its stages and functions. It integrates the ecosystem service assessment as decision support technique in different stages, while GIS & Remote Sensing are integrated in the whole process of the developed EAPL-CW. promising results from the primary tests of the EAPL-CW’s applicability, which were carried out by this research using the local context of a case study. However the EAPM-CW is a novel framework, it opens channels for the future research including opportunities for applications in different sensitive ecosystems.
