Parental Concerns Towards the Use of Social Networking Sites Among Adolescents and the Impact on the Family

Abstract

The study aims to focus on the perception of parents towards the use of social networking sites (SNS) and its impact on the family. The research employed a descriptive survey design and the data of 150 parent and 100 adolescents from tertiary institutions in Lagos state. The instrument used was a questionnaire. Two sets of questionnaire were drawn for adolescents and parents on the use of SNS and were used to answer five research questions and test two hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis was done using chi-square. The result indicated a significant difference between parental concerns over the use of SNS in the two tertiary institutions, there was also a significant impact of SNS use by the adolescents on the family. The finding highlights a prompt need for SNS usage regulation for parents in order to direct and control their adolescents.
